About the Executive Director

Tim McHale is Founder and Executive Director of the Boston Minstrel Company -- a group of forty highly charged singers who celebrate at shelters on a weekly basis. Tim is a skilled music facilitator who has led songfests with guitar and piano for more than twenty years. Tim’s skills include high-energy song leading of “top forty” folk, pop, blues, and rock tunes, as well as solo performance. Having built a solid reputation for creating musical celebrations which are engaging, unifying, and just plain fun for all ages, Tim has also created custom songs for milestone events and special occasions.

Tim believes that musical connections can transform a group from ordinary to extra-ordinary within minutes. He confidently integrates voices and instruments, using music:

  • as ice-breaker,
  • as stress-reliever,
  • as a creative outlet,
  • to “empower” individuals and groups and,
  • as a way of team building.

Tim generates group interaction via songfests at community celebrations, corporate events, retreats, seminars and parties. Significant accomplishments and performances include:

  • 1996 Olympic Torch Bearer, recognized for musical leadership and outreach;
  • One of Liz Walker’s (WBZ-TV) “Heroes”, recognized for outstanding community work;
  • Commissioned by First Night, Boston, 2000, Tim composed “Light a Light”, Boston’s Millennium song.
  • Awarded the “Extra Mile Award” from Massachusetts’ Housing and Shelter Alliance, 2001 for musical outreach;
  • performed for corporate events: Genzyme, Kodak, Polaroid, and Steelcase;
  • performed for community events: Boston First Night 2000, Walk for Hunger, 2002 Olympic Torch Celebration, and the Body and Soul Conference;
  • performed for educational events: Boston University, WGBH Kid’s Day, and elementary schools in Greater Boston.

Audience acclaim:

“I can’t recall a single time in fifteen years when an event had such a positive impact.”

“The joyful song and lively sing-a-long atmosphere brought everyone to their feet, literally.”

“You brought out goodwill, respect, and delight in each other. You strip away the bonds of hardship and economic boundaries. It was magic and reality at once.”
